Sleeping Pattern Disruptions as a Result of Alzheimer’s Disease

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

Although this may not be a problem for the patient their family and care givers may rapidly become drained and exhausted. People often assume that as we get older, we need less sleep which may be true for some people but the opposite is true for others as everyone establishes the sleep pattern that suits them. While the sleep needs of an Alzheimer’s disease sufferer may not change their sleep patterns can reverse making them noisy and disruptive by moving around the house during the night as if it is the daytime. It may also be tempting to let them sleep for long periods during the day to give the carer some respite to do chores, or even take a nap themselves. However, it’s much more appropriate to keep the Alzheimer’s sufferer gently active during the day as this is a good way of helping them to re-establish a sleeping pattern where they settle again at night. You should also make sure that other factors such as incontinence, night cramps or joint pain aren’t causing the restless nights. Night sitting services are available if a solution to a patient’s night activity can’t be found.

Even if a service like this can only be used for one or two nights a week, at least the carer is getting some quality sleep. You’re hungry after a busy day at work, itching to get home to see your family, and now you’re stuck in traffic. So you finally stroll into your house at 6:04 PM, your 2 young children are clamoring for your attention, and they’re hungry too. You pop some frozen dinners in the microwave knowing full well they’re not healthy, but also knowing that you just don’t have time to think, much less cook.

Recognizing A Baby?s Sleep Patterns

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Baby?s actually follow certain sleep patterns, and if you get to know what these patterns are you?ll start sleeping more soundly and better the times you do have a chance to get some sleep! They actually sleep very unsoundly. Their sleep is full of interruptions because their sleep cycle is not yet fully developed, thus they wake more often during the night. This is the really restful phase of sleep you require to feel fresh and new in the morning. Usually time permitting another 2 hours are spent in light sleep. Most Baby?s will sleep in increments of only two to three hour intervals. Sometimes their internal sleep clocks are also confused from being in the womb, and they mistakenly believe that night is day and day is night. They will start sleeping about 14-16 hours per day, and many of those hours will be spent sleeping at night. What can you do in the meantime to feel more refreshed?

This will help change your baby?s clock around so they spend more of their time sleeping at night and not during the day. This will help comfort them and allow them to sleep more easily. There are many co-sleeper products available that allow you to sleep with your baby safely at night. Consider trying one until your baby is about 12 weeks old, when they are old enough to start sleeping on their own. If your baby’s sleeping habits need some adjustment, here are some ways to get him on track. Keep the television or stereo on.

This will accomplish two things. First, he will learn to sleep even through noise, which is important, since this child will be taking naps in your home for four or five years. Secondly, he will get the idea that the daytime is not the right time for long periods of sleep. The chill will wake him. Don’t leave him uncovered for long, though. This is a great time to put him on a mat for some tummy time if it’s not feeding time. Now, of course the second half of this problem is the staying awake at night.

This is going to take some time, and babies usually make some significant adjustments within about three weeks, though you will be getting up for feedings at least once at night for a bit longer. Typically, these problems affect more than 75 percent of pregnant women.
